Calder's Dairy Farm

Katie, Mom and I took Damien and Evelyn to Calder's Dairy Farm today.  The weather was beautiful and it seemed like a good way to celebrate the weekend.  Luke stayed home to work on painting the swing set.  (Pictures coming on that soon!)  I haven't been to Calder's since I was young and apparently it's gotten quite a bit larger.

Evelyn wasn't sure at first how she felt about the animals.  She was especially suspicious of a cow that licked her hand.

She warmed up to the idea of a free range pig and was all smiles.

Damien decided to show Evelyn that there was nothing to fear from the cows.

We were lucky and got to see the cows being milked in the milking barn.

A trip to Calder's wouldn't be complete without a little ice-cream.  Evelyn made sure that she didn't miss out on that part of the trip.

We ate our ice-cream by the pond.  Damien made sure all of the ducks and geese were very well fed.  He says that we will need to go back and make sure to bring Luke.

We had a really wonderful time.  It was really nice to see how enthralled Evelyn was by the experience.  Damien made sure to tell me that he had a really good time.

Molasses Cookies

When I was growing up, my siblings and I were all in 4-H.  Fair week was the most anticipated week of the summer.  We would spend ages preparing all of the projects that we would enter into the fair.  Our projects ranged from livestock (sheep, rabbits, pigs) to the agricultural (tomatoes, corn stalks, soybeans) and finally to the crafty (plaster craft, ceramics, candy making, baking).

Oh, the baking competition.  Hundreds of hopeful kids would bring their baking masterpiece into the fair to be judged.  I'm sure the sugar-filled judges got their fill of chocolate chip cookies and carrot cake.  When I started in 4-H at the age of 8, my brother Jason and I made molasses cookies.  We made them for years, until we were old enough to make something a little more complicated on our own.  For several of the years, we made them with Grandma.  I can see her clearly in my mind, apron tied on, capable hands measuring and sifting.  It makes me smile.

The first year we made them, we used all butter.  The flavor was fantastic, but they were a little flat and more crisp than chewy.  The next year, we used all shortening.  The texture was perfect, but the flavor was missing the buttery goodness.  The third year was perfect.  We used a butter/shortening combination and were rewarded with a perfectly buttery, wonderfully soft and chewy molasses cookie.

Each year, we earned a blue ribbon for our cookies.  We eventually moved on to more complicated baked goods.  I even ended up winning the baking trophy one year with a pineapple chiffon cake.  These cookies, however, were the important stepping stone from novice to baker in my kitchen journey.

These cookies make an excellent breakfast, a satisfying mid-day snack, and an indulgent midnight nibble.  I like to make a double batch.  They'll all get eaten, and it doesn't take any extra work.  They freeze well, if you're able to keep them out of the boys hands.

Brer Rabbit Molasses Cookies
from the kitchen of Stella Hehl
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tsp. baking soda
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 tsp. cloves
  • 1/2 tsp. ginger
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
Melt shortening and butter in a pan over low heat.  Remove from heat and let cool. Add sugar, molasses, and egg.  Beat well until smooth.  Sift flour, soda, cloves, ginger, cinnamon, and salt together.  Mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients.  Mix well and chill.  Form dough into 1" balls and roll in sugar.  Place on parchment lined cookie sheet with 2" between cookies.  Bake 8-10 minutes in a 375 degree oven.

*It's best to err on the side of underdone and let the cookies rest on the cookie sheets to finish their baking.  These really are the best when they are soft and chewy.

Labor Day

Luke and I took Evelyn to Munson Park for a Labor Day picnic.  On the way there, we picked up my mom.  We took Icarus along so he could burn off some energy.  Justin met us there with Connor and Bailey in tow.  We set up blankets in the shade of a tree and ate our lunch of Jimmy Johns, iced tea, and melty ice cream sandwiches.
It was warm and humid, but a nice breeze and some overcast clouds kept it from being too hot.  We took the babies into the play place and pushed them on the baby swings.

Connor is all set and ready to drive.  He just needs to not eat the steering wheel.

After playing, we headed around the pond for a walk.  It was a very nice Labor Day outing.

The Labor Day weekend is upon us and Luke and I didn't really have any official plans.  Damien came down with strep throat, so he ended up staying down in Findlay.  After a dutch baby breakfast, I successfully put up Evelyn's hair into pigtails.  That's no small feat considering she bobs and weaves like a champion prize fighter as soon as I start to touch her hair.
We headed to the Farmer's Market to pick up our CSA from Jentzen farms.  I also picked up some flowers for the hallway, some pears and apples to make baby food, summer squash, and 5 winter squash to store.  We met Luke's parents at the market.  Joetta brought some new sweet potato flavored puffs for Evelyn to try.

The CSA contained several hot peppers that Luke and I used for dinner later in the evening.
I made short work of the apples and churned out some pretty applesauce for baby food.  I think it would be great on pork too.  Evelyn had some for lunch and really loved it.

After lunch, we headed out to Franklin Park mall in Toledo.  The last time Luke and I were there was when Evelyn was a month old.  I think we need to get out more!  We split an Irish Breakfast at The Claddagh.  Evelyn ate up the new sweet potato puffs with gusto.

We wandered around the mall a bit,  I picked up a new cake pan at Williams and Sonoma that makes an apple shaped cake.  I also got a 4 bottle hydration belt at the sporting good store.  One step closer to my half marathon plan.  Evelyn spent the whole time in her new Kokopax, a back pack carrier.  She absolutely loves it.

I have been feeling lately that Evelyn is changing and growing right before my eyes.  This was definitely true today, when Evelyn decided to learn to crawl while Luke and I were watching her play in the living room.  I'm so torn between overwhelmingly excited to watch her change and develop and terrified that she's now very independent and mobile.

Overall a very nice start to the holiday weekend.

Here We Go!

I've been wanting to put a blog together for a while now.  My hope is to use this blog as a way to document all of the things that I feel like I should scrapbook about.  Birthdays, races, cook-outs, family get-togethers.  This blog will serve as a good visual history of my family's life.  I'll probably also blog randomly about my latest obsessions.  So, here we go!
